Free Music and the Recording Industry

I was disappointed today as I ran across this article [mathaba.net]. Recently the BBC Orchestra performed Beethoven's symphonies and the recordings were released online for a limited period of time by the BBC. So basically, it was them giving away their intellectual property.

As it turns out, the British recording labels went into a tizzy about this, saying that this created unfair competition and arguing that this media should not be given away. It goes so far as to suggest that they would threaten legal actions which is rather ridiculous.

It's unfortunate that this details the issues with the weak and unstable foundation that the recording industries have built their business upon. Their ability to evolve and keep up with the media needs of a people leaves them playing an inevitable losing game of tug-o-war with their consumers. Perhaps this will lead the a necessary retirement-influenced erossion in the music executive ranks, but then some might call that too idealistic.
